NS Men FAQs

1. I am currently serving my National Service and I have already accepted an offer of admission from NUS/another university. Can I still apply to Yale-NUS?

Application to Yale-NUS is merely an expression of interest and you do not need to withdraw from any other school at which you are holding an offer of admission. However, if you are offered a place in Yale-NUS and decide to accept our offer, you will have to relinquish your place at the other university/ college.

2. If I have completed/will be completing my National Service in 2012, are there gap year opportunities available to me before I enter Yale-NUS College in 2013?

We will have multiple opportunities available for students who want to take a gap year after completion of their National Service, before entering Yale-NUS College in July 2013. These include internships at Yale-NUS, internships with some of our internship partners, and opportunities to volunteer for non-profit organizations abroad. We will work with admitted students individually to create the best gap year opportunity for them.

3. Can I submit army testimonials in place of the teacher recommendations?

No. We require every applicant to submit 2 recommendations from instructors who taught you in academic subjects. However, you may submit army testimonials as an additional letter of recommendation, so long as the letter contributes a unique perspective on your candidacy that we wouldn't get from your teachers or from the school testimonial.

4. If I am invited to an interview, will Yale-NUS College write to my unit's commanding officer to request for permission to leave camp for that time?

Yes, we will endeavour to make arrangements or to issue a formal invitation to interview so that National Servicemen may be given permission to leave camp.
